After arriving in Kathmandu we allow time to acclimatise, purchase equipment and see the city before taking a short flight to Lukla deep in the mountains. From here the trek begins by taking you to Namche Bazaar, the heart of the Sherpa community, and onwards to Tengboche and its famous Buddhist monastery.
The whole group will trek to Kalapathar, where you will be able to see Everest Base Camp and its hive of activity as numerous expeditions go about their business in preparation for climbing the highest mountain in the world. There are some stunning views of Everest, as well as Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam along the way and for those wishing to climb Island Peak, the trek to Kalapathar will provide excellent acclimatisation.
Those who wish to climb Island Peak (6,189 metres) will spend a couple of days trekking to its Base Camp before starting the ascent. The peak involves some climbing with crampons and ice axe and areas where the group is roped. Previous experience is preferable and a good level of fitness is essential. There will be a team of experienced high altitude Sherpas to assist and guide the group with the climb if required and it is not unusual for the whole group to reach the summit.
Whether trekking or climbing, this trip is superb for its scenery, the people and the experience of being in the Everest region of Nepal.
