This trek is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Himalayas of Bhutan, its’ outstanding beauty as well as interact with the local people. 

Visiting Bhutan is a wonderful experience and this trekking region is of a moderate level and therefore suitable for DofE groups. As well as completing the requirements of the award there are also opportunities to visit many local landmarks and experience this fascinating culture. The area offers exceptional views and landscapes and the trip for many is an experience of a lifetime.

The sample itinerary gives an idea of the terrain and what to expect trekking in this area of Bhutan. 

The trek starts at Khoma (near Thimphu) and ends in Chamgang (Thimphu), where there are many beautiful high-altitude lakes, creating an exceptional route to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition or International Award Adventurous Journey. The trek distance is 41km and the highest altitude is 4720m which is an amazing achievement, furthermore, the trek offers exceptional views and landscapes. Accommodation is a mix of camping, resorts and hotel stays to ensure that all aspects of the Award are covered.

Travel to Bhutan is usually via Delhi or Nepal depending on your home country – this would all be discussed and can be arranged for you.

Day 1: Home country to Delhi

Day 2: Delhi to Paro. (2200m)

Depending on flight timing we can fix the days program. Delhi flights normally lands in Paro late afternoon. Check into hotel, drop luggage and drive to Heritage Farmstay. Welcome & reception for the students. A short Traditional cultural dance program will be organised. The dancing troupe showcases all regions dances with costumes, highlanders folklore dances with yak & Mask dances. Later dinner in Heritage Farmstay. After dinner leave for hotel for the night.

Day 3: Tiger’s Nest. (2350m)

After early breakfast trek to visit the Tiger’s Nest monastery. Return back to base by 1.30pm. Traditional cooking demo - Momos are highlanders/Himalayan people basic food. Later depart for hotel.

Day 4: Khoma (start of trek) – Geynikha (2950m)

The walk will take you through terraced paddy fields and conifer forests to the Geynikha settlement. The route then descends to a Chorten that marks a camping place alongside of a stream.

Day 5: Geynikha - Gur (3290m)

Crossing a suspension bridge, the trail heads west then climbs steeply towards the south to a rock platform and crest at 3200m. A further walk will take you to a camp in a forest clearing.

Day 6: Gur – Labatamba (4300m)

You will cross the pass at 4240m for a spectacular view of Dagala village. You will pass though several herders camps and reach the foot of Labatamba valley, near Utso Lake, where plenty of Golden Trout flourish. Camp.

Day 7: Labatamba – Panka (4000m)

The trail will climb along the west side of the lake to the saddle at 4500m, where you will have great mountain views. There is a steep descent to another lake at 4350m, a valley and then to Panka where you will camp.

Day 8: Panka – Talakha (3080m)

The route will take you north to cross a pass at 4000m and then to climb alongside of the ridge to a crest at 4270m. From here, there is a view of the Dagala range and a view of Thimphu. There is a long descent through forests to the Goemba and village of Talakha. Camp.

Day 9: Talakha – Chamgang (2640m) (end of trek) - Thimphu (2350m)

There will be a steep trail to Chamgang from where you will drive to Thimphu. After checking into your hotel there is time to shower and have lunch. Afternoon visits: - Buddha Point, Memorial Chorten National Library End of day, at leisure in Hotel. Dinner & night in hotel (THIMPHU)

Day 10: In Thimphu.

After breakfast, cover local sightseeing. Night & dinner in hotel (THIMPHU)

Day 11:

After breakfast in hotel, depart for Punakha via Dochula Pass. On arrival in Punakha, sightseeing visits: Punakha Dzong Chimi Lakhang Evening at leisure in hotel. Dinner & night in hotel (PUNAKHA)

Day 12: Paro.

After breakfast, depart for Paro. On arrival in Paro, complete local sightseeing:- Rinpung Dzong Museum Kichu Lakhang

Later check into Hotel. Evening at leisure. Dinner & in Hotel.

Day 13:

Drop off at Paro airport to catch flight to Delhi.

Day 14: Delhi to home country.
