This itinerary gives an idea of the terrain and what to expect trekking in Bhutan. The long, rewarding trek route allows you to visit historic Bhutanese Dzongs (fortress) and see various lakes and rivers. There will be opportunities to visit local landmarks, learn about the culture and experience landscapes and wildlife up close. The accommodation is a mix of camping and hotels.

The detailed itinerary will give you an outline of what to expect. This 31 day trip is probably one of the hardest high altitude treks you can take on. It is a stunning route passing six 7000 metre peaks, and crossing nine passes over 4500 metres. The support for the group will be excellent and team members need a very good level of fitness and stamina.

Day 1: Home country - Delhi/Kathmandu

Day 2: Arrive in Paro (2280m)

You will be met at the airport by your guide and driven to the hotel. You'll have the opportunity to explore Paro town in the afternoon and visit the famous Rinpung Paro Dzong.

Day 3: Paro excursion to Taktsang Monastery

A 2 hour horse ride (optional) will take you through pine forest to view Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery, which clings to the edge of a 900m sheer rock cliff. Short walk back for a hotel stay.

Day 4: Start of trek - Drukgyel Dzong to Sharna (2800m)

Begin with a drive to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong (2580m), where on a clear day you have an unforgettable view of Mt. Jhomolhari (7314m). Your trek will start here and take you through the Paro Chhu river valley, passing settlements and farmhouses. Camp at Sharna.

Day 5: Sharna - Thangkthanka (3520m)

A tougher day, you will continue upriver in and out of blue pine forests. Wildlife and changes in vegetation will be seen in Jigme Dorji National Park, eventually elevating to Thangkthanka. Camp.

Day 6: Thangkthanka - Jangothang (4040m)

Continuing to trek into the high mountains, the trail will leave the forest line and climb into a beautiful valley which passes Tengethang, the winter home of yak herdsmen. Whilst here, you have the opportunity to see a glorious sun set over Mt. Jhomolhari (7314m) and Mt. Jichu Drake (6989m).

Day 7: Rest day in Jangothang

Day hike options are –

Hike to Jumolhari Glacier (4 ½ hours there and back). Hike to Jichu Drake Glacier (3 hours there and back). Walk up the mountain between Jumolhari and Jichu Drake, 5200m. (8 hours there and back). Alternatively, you can take part in a fishing expedition to Tshophu, a high altitude lake. (2 hour hike)

Day 8: Jangothang – Lingshi (4150m)

Heading uphill, you will cross the Nyile La pass (4890m). As you descend, you will encounter juniper, rhododendron, yak herder camps and eventually herds of blue sheep. Camp in Lingshi.

Day 9: Lingshi - Chebisa (3850m)

A more relaxing hike, you will visit Lingshi Dzong, previously used to control travel between Tibet and Bhutan. There will be time to visit Chebisa village and experience the Bhutanese culture. Camp.

Day 10: Chebisa - Shakshepasa (3980m)

Crossing the Gombu La pass (4350m), you will descend into a rhododendron filled valley eventually passing more yak herder camps to Shakshepasa. Camp.

Day 11: Shakshepasa - Tsharijathang - Robluthang (4160m)

A longer hike, you will start early morning through Jhari La pass (4747m). Descending to Tsharijathang, herds of Takin (The national animal of Bhutan) can be seen through the valley. End with a climb to the camp at Robluthang.

Day 12: Robluthang - Limithang (4140m)

Begin the day with a more strenuous hike to the Shinge La pass (5005m). During your descent to Limithang fantastic views of the Great Tiger Mountain, Mt. Gangchhenta (6840m) and the glacially carved Gangchhenta valley can be seen.

Day 13: Limithang - Laya (3840m)

A less demanding day, you'll follow a trail through a heavily wooded and uninhabited valley. As you climb up out the forests you'll be rewarded with fantastic views of the Gangchhenta and Masang Gang (7165m) mountains. Camp at Laya.

Day 14: Rest day in Laya

A chance to explore the unique village of Laya with its community school, hospital, archery field and shop. Roughly populated with 800 residents with their own language, customs and distinct dress.

Day 15: Laya - Rodufu (4160m)

Gradual downhill trek to the Lunana trail junction, followed by a gradual climb through a forest of conifers, maple and rhododendron. The trail eventually widens as you progress through the river valley, leading to a small stream at Rodufu. Camp.

Day 16: Rodufu - Narethang (4900m)

A long hike through the Tsimo La pass (4950m), descending to Narethang. You'll pass dwarf rhododendron and hike in the shadow of Gangla Karchung peak (6395m).

Day 17: Narethang - Tarina (4020m)

A climb to Karchung La pass (5240m), continuing down to the glacial lakes acting as the source of Tang Chhu river. You'll be offered views of the mighty Jejekangphu Gang (7300m) and Tsenda Kang (7100m) peaks. Camp.

Day 18: Tarina - Woche, (3940m)

Walk down through conifer forests, following the upper reaches of the Pho Chhu river. Climb over a ridge and eventually down to the village of Woche in the Lunana region.

Day 19: Woche - Thega - Lhedi (3600m)

Gradual climb to the Keche La pass (4580m), leading downhill to Thega village and eventually Lhedi village. Camp.

Day 20: Lhedi - Chozo - Thanza (4080m)

The trail follows the main source of the Pho Chhu river, gradually climbing to Chozo village. Here there will be a chance to see Chozo Dzong and the lay monks. Trek through the valley above Chozo and approach Thanza village near the foot of Zogophu Gamp (7100m), the Table Mountain. Camp.

Day 21: Rest day in Thanza

A fantastic opportunity to interact with the hospitable local villages and explore the beautiful surrounding area. Relax around the camp and prepare for the treks that await.

Day 22: Thanza - Danji (4600m)

A short yet steep climb to Danji, part way up the Jaze La pass. Chance to acclimatise at the camp, and see spectacular views of surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Day 23: Danji - Tso Chena (4800m)

For the first part of the day you'll climb over three false summits to Jaze La pass (5050m). This is followed by a short downhill trek to the lake of Tso Chena. Camp.

Day 24: Tso Chena - Jichu Dramo (4880m)

The trail has a series of gradual ups and downs between the snow-capped peaks and across the Loju La pass (4940m). Descend to the camp at Jichu Dramo.

Day 25: Jichu Dramo - Chukarpo (4950m)

Start with a tougher climb to Rinchen Zoe La pass (5290m), eventually heading downhill to Chukarpo just above the tree line. Camp.

Day 26: Chukarpo - Thampe Tso (4200m)

Mostly downhill, you'll walk along the river and eventually climb up to the Um So lake (4230m), where religious treasures were once found. Head further downhill to the campsite by the lake of Thampe Tso.

Day 27: Thampe Tso - Maurothang (3550m)

A short walk to the base of Thampe La, followed by a steep climb to the pass (4580m). You'll continue to trek all downhill through rhododendron bushes to the yak pasture of Maurothang. Camp.

Day 28: Maurothang - Nikachu Chazam - Punakha

Descend through the picturesque village of Sephu to Nikachu Chazam on a long, final day of trekking. You'll be driven to a comfortable guest house near Trongsa, a beautiful Dzong located in the centre of the Bumthang region. This is followed by a scenic drive to Punakha across the mountains. Along the route there may be opportunities to visit the Chendebji Chorten, a stone Buddhist monument, and the top of the Pele La pass (3400m). Hotel stay in Punakha.

Day 29: Drive from Punakha to Thimphu

In the morning you will visit the historic Punakha Dzong, the second Dzong to be built in Bhutan. You will then drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, to visit the Trashi Chhoe Dzong and explore the shops along Thimphu's main street Norzin Lam.

Day 30: Drive from Thimphu back to Paro

You will drive back for Paro in the afternoon, leaving the morning free for more sighteeing around Thimphu. Hotel stay.

Day 31: Paro - Delhi/Kathmandu

One last chance to sightsee around Paro before heading to Delhi/Kathmandu for the trip home.
