The trek in the Helambu region starts with a short drive north from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. There are numerous trails to follow in this region so participants can safely devise their route from local maps. The area is versatile so there is also flexibility on the number of days needed to complete a trek. This area will allow the group to travel through fir and rhododendron forests, flower meadows and along side streams. This can be a group booking or an Open expedition; all participants must have completed their practise expedition successfully prior to starting the trek.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD EXPEDITION
On arrival in Kathmandu time is allowed to relax following the journey, to explore the abundance of places to see and visit of cultural interest or simply to wander around, shop and take in the atmosphere. Any final planning for routes and organising kit can be done, as well as final shopping ready for the expedition. The local people are friendly and Kathmandu has a lively fun atmosphere that is enjoyable to be a part of.
Treks in the Helambu region start with a short drive north from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. There are numerous trails to follow in this region so young people can safely devise their routes from local maps. The area is versatile so there is also flexibility on the number of days needed to complete a trek. This area will allow the group to travel through fir and rhododendron forests, flower meadows and alongside streams. The walks in the area are suitable for moderate walkers as it does not reach heights to warrant concern over the altitude for most participants.
Time can be allowed back in Kathmandu to relax and site see and enjoy celebrating achievements from the expedition.

Day 1: Depart UK
Day 2: Arrive Kathmandu
Day 3: Kathmandu (shopping, kit prep, sight see)
Day 4: Drive to Sundarijal, trek to Chisapani (2165m)
A fairly steep walk through forests, on to some small villages with great views of the Kathmandu valley. The trail goes through the Shivapuri wildlife reserve, up to Borlang Bhanjang at 2440 metres and onto Chisopani
Day 5: Chisapani to Khutumsang (2470m)
From this very small village the trail climbs to over 2600 metres today again passing through some small villages, trekking along a ridge, through forests to some open meadows. Again some stunning views from the trail.
Day 6: Khutumsang to Thadepati (3690m)
From Khutumsang the trail climbs to an altitude of 3690 metres. There are likely to be a number of locals tending their stock and the opportunity to buy fresh produce from them.
Day 7: Thadepati to Melamchigaon (2530m)
Moving on from Melamchigaon the trail goes down quite steeply passing through a Settlements where the Helambu Sherpas live, they are a different cast from the Everest region Sherpas. There will be a river bridge to cross prior to climbing back up to the next camp.
Day 8: Melamchigaon to Tarke Ghyang(2600m)
There is a substantial path through rhododendron forest, some villages, rice fields and going steeply down to more tropical conditions.
Day 9: Tarke Ghyang into Kathmandu
Day 10: Kathmandu – visits e.g Patan/Durbar Square/Boubhanath
Day 11: Depart Kathmandu
